In 1839, the slave ship L'Amistad is taken over by the African slaves on board, and the slave-masters are all killed. When the slaves are recaptured they are put on trial for murder, and it's up to lawyer Matthew McConaughey to defend them. For their case to be successful, McConaughey must communicate with the leader of the slaves (Djimon Hounsou), with help also coming in the form of Anthony Hopkins and Morgan Freeman. Although the case is about murder the defence are fighting against slavery and it's up to the courts to decide who's guilty.
I think the main factor that puts people off from seeing this is the length, but it doesn't really seem like that long a film. The performances are all terrific, the plot is realistic, and overall is a good film. Although there is a pretty impressive looking cast, the man who stood out for me was Djimon Hounsou as the leader of the slaves, whose performance was terrific especially since it was his movie debut. Although the movie may have been stretched out a little, with the court room battles being over dramatised a little, I did not once feel like stopping the film due to boredom. If you appreciate good quality films with good acting and a moving sentiment behind it then you'll like this, but be warned there are some pretty nasty scenes involving the treatment of the slaves, but that all adds to the effect of the film. This would have been a whole lot more successful and recognised had it not been for the over-hyped Titanic.
