Eddie (Goldberg) is a hardcore New York Knicks fan, and her life is centred around her beloved basketball team. However, the team are on the down and need a change, with team morale at an all time low and the new owner having little knowledge himself of the sport. Due to her popularity with her fellow fans, Eddie is appointed coach of the team in an attempt to turn things round; a decision the players and newspapers deem ludicrous. The first few matches don't prove to be as successful as Eddie would have hoped, but as you may imagine she manages to turn things round...
I don't know much about basketball, and so I haven't got a clue whether the Knicks' players were real or fictional (I found out later that they were real), so I watched this film hoping for some comic relief. I didn't really find it that funny, although Whoopi Goldberg is excellent as usual, and does save this film from being poor. But the comedy wasn't even that essential, as the sport sequences were enjoyable enough, and the film flowed well and I didn't get bored at any point.
If they could have toned down some of the language (swearing is apparently essential in all films these days) then it would have a larger audience in children. The reason they would need children to watch this is that a lot of it is too predictable and older viewers will possibly find it laughable and unrealistic. Well I didn't, even though I did have this feeling I'd seen it all before (normally a sports film about a bad team turning things round to win the championship is about a kids' team, not the NBA). Oh, and before I forget, celebrity cameos I recognised were Dave Letterman and Dennis Rodman.
